Are you constantly stressed? Worried? Overwhelmed? Has the word “stress” become very common in your daily conversations? Do you use this word to describe the way you feel every day?

It is important you understand what stress is so you can address it, change it and eliminate it. The Webster Dictionary defines stress as “a state in which a strong demand is made on the nervous system.” After extensive studies, experts have determined that when we stress about something, our immune system is immediately impacted. The effects stress will have on you are dependant upon the way you react to it.

In coping with stress, be sure to get enough sleep, eat a balance diet, breathe consciously, practice self-relaxation techniques and follow a healthy exercise routine. An exercise practice that is gentle, effective, natural and non-invasive is Chi Kung. The practice of Chi Kung can help you to recognize, develop and use your inner-strength to cope with stress in a balanced way.

The essence of Chi Kung is to find the point of balance between two opposite forces, also recognized as “balancing the chi”. In the case of stress, we can apply the practice of Chi Kung to find harmony between nervous tension and inner peace. Chi Kung is the foundation of Chinese medicine, martial arts and meditation where health depends on the natural flow of chi. Anything blocking our chi will produce physical, mental or emotional imbalance.

Stress can be managed using all the components of regular Chi Kung practice, such as:

Breathing from the lower abdomen or “dantian” is essential in the practice of Chi Kung as a tool to release stress. The diaphragmatic breathing in slow motion increases the amount of oxygen and blood flow to the brain. The mind and the nervous system become relaxed and more alert, producing a state of balance. In this state, you are more likely to disengage from a stressful situation and control your reactions, rather than creating resistance and tension by adding more stress to the situation.

While practicing some of the standing meditations such as the “Standing like a Tree” and “Holding the Chi Ball”, you learn to stay in a motionless position, even when your nervous system is refusing to stand still. You develop mental balance and concentration, as well as patience that leads you to release tension and anxiety, rather than increasing it by rebelling against the exercises. If you feel your energy is scattered, or you cannot think clearly, take a few minutes to ground yourself like a tree growing deep roots. You will prevent not only stress, but also depression. Furthermore, you will intensify your senses.

3. Warm Up and Chi Kung Exercises.

Daily Chi Kung practice increases your level of physical stamina, enabling your body to release stress and anxiety safely. Chi Kung practice also boosts your immune system, preventing chronic stress that can lead to illness and mental disorder. You also develop an acute awareness of your body, leading you to locate the areas where your chi is “stacked” causing stress and tension. With constant practice, you unblocked your chi while improving your balance, flexibility and coordination. Practice the “shoulder rotations” and “neck exercises”, or the “butterfly stretch” to dissolve the accumulation of tension in sensitive areas.

You can use your Chi Kung practice to counteract the effects of stress in your life. With its daily practice, you will soon notice the natural flow of your chi as you create an innate sense of balance that overcomes unpleasant situations, disturbing emotions, problematic people, physical discomfort and more.
