While it is true that some people are able to successfully launch a career as an administrative assistant with nothing but a high school diploma, these opportunities are becoming increasingly rare. In fact, a growing number of employers are insisting upon hiring only those individuals who have a college degree. This is particularly true when it comes to medical administrative assistant positions, as becoming a medical admin assistant requires having additional knowledge beyond that which is required of a general administrative assistant.

As with any administrative assistant position, you will need to be highly skilled with more advanced secretarial duties. Therefore, part of your medial admin assistant training will include learning how to do the same things that are expected of general administrative assistants. For example, you will need to learn how to use a variety of different software applications, including presentation software, word processing software, database software and spreadsheet software. You will also need to learn how to use various types of office equipment, including fax machines, scanners and copy machines.

Since your ultimate goal is to work within a health care facility, your medical admin assistant training will also include coursework in areas that are specific to the medical field. For example, you will need to become familiar with medical terminology as well as taking dictation. You will also need to learn more about billing and processing insurance claims. In this way, you will be able to perform all of the routine tasks that are required of medical administrative assistants.

Fortunately, there are many different paths you can take to obtain the medical admin assistant training you need. In fact, some high school vocational education programs offer training in this field. If you have already graduated from high school, you can also obtain the medical admin assistant training you need through a community college, a business school or a vocational-technical school. Keep in mind, however, that you need to enroll in a training program that is specific to the medical administrative assistant field if you wish to specialize in this area, as medical admin assistants need to learn the language of the industry in order to be successful in this career.

After completing your medical admin assistant training, it is a good idea to obtain certification in the field. Even general certification, such as becoming a Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) or Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) will help make your resume more impressive. Becoming a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) through the National Healthcare Association is an even better way to go, as this certification demonstrates your proficiency in basic administrative assistant duties as well as those that are specific to the medical industry.

It should be noted that your medical admin assistant training likely will not end after you earn your degree. In fact, medical administrative assistants are regularly called upon to take advantage of ongoing education opportunities, as it is essential to remain up-to-date with changes in the medical industry as well as updates to software and other technology used in the industry.
