As a trainer, I hear so many women complaining why they can’t lose weight. They put in the work when it comes to training, but when it comes to nutrition, that’s a whole different story!
I’ve heard everything under the sun about people who think eating no carbs is the answer, or following a low calorie diet as the answer, or the worst skipping meals and not eating AT ALL! Ladies, this is the worst thing you can do to yourself.
Not only does eating very little (say less than 1,000 calories a day) hurt you, but eating nothing at all really wrecks your metabolism. You may seem like you are doing great, and yes you will lose weight, but what happens when you start to eat again after you lose the weight you wanted to lose by not eating? You’ll gain it all back and then some. Why? Because your body will be wondering why you weren’t feeding it in the first place, which in turn will hold on to any food (hence calories) you put into your body because it’s been starved for so long. It’s saying “Well, I need to hold onto this because I don’t know if I’ll get enough food again!” Eventually, doing this will make your metabolism actually decreases, and it’ll be even harder to lose the weight with a low metabolism. Your body will go into what is called “starvation mode”. Plus, your body needs energy to functions and SURVIVE, which brings me to my next subject of a low-carb diet.
Whenever we think about eating healthy or trying to lose weight, we go straight to thinking carbs are the enemy so we cut out all carbs and ban them from our “diet”. Did you know carbs are actually good for you, and CAN help you lose weight? It’s true! Not all carbs are bad carbs! Carbs are essential for energy to help you workout, run, jump, and get through any physical activity throughout your day. Stray from items such as cookies, cakes, fried foods, and candy which are the kind of carbs that can make you gain weight- not just because they are HIGH in carbs, but they are also full of fat, and sugar and loaded with excess calories that your body does not need. These are processed or refined foods. Instead, opt for good carbs such as oat meal, brown rice, or sweet potatoes which are more whole and natural foods.
Most low-carb diets are too low for our daily intake we need anyway. Did you know carbs also help fill you up? Eating the right amount will help surpress your appetite so you don’t tend to over eat or feel like you need more as eating refined sugars would leave you. And you know what else is good about carbs?!? They can actually HELP speed up your metabolism! They release fatty acids that encourage fat burning. Do carbs still sound like the enemy now?
From my own experience, I use to eat 600 calories or less a day for MONTHS. When I finally stopped this cycle and started to eat normally again, I gained my weight back and MORE. It was hard to overcome that fact, but I knew why it happened. I had starved my body for too long. I then decided to start eating healthy and exercising again the healthy way, and soon that weight dropped down again, and I got back to being in shape- eating the right foods with carbs and all!
So, if you think skipping meals, cutting certain food groups out of your diet, or not eating all-together will work for you- think again. If you want to lose weight, you have to be committed to an exercise program, as well as healthy eating habits. You didn’t gain weight overnight, so don’t expect to lose it over night either. Food is not your enemy, it’s WHAT you eat that determines weight loss along with a balanced lifestyle of exercising and staying positive. Til next time Fit Chicks!
